Description

This Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a comforting and hearty dish featuring seasoned ground beef patties smothered in a creamy mushroom sauce. Perfectly seared then baked to tender perfection, it's an easy one-dish meal that delivers classic flavors and pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes or egg noodles.

Ingredients

Hamburger Steaks

  • lbs ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Sauce

  • 1 (10 oz) can cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

Topping

  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set it aside to prepare for baking.
  2. Prepare the Hamburger Steaks: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined to avoid tough patties. Shape the mixture into 4 to 6 oval-shaped patties.
  3. Sear the Patties: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook them for 2-3 minutes on each side until browned but not fully cooked through. Then transfer the seared patties to the prepared baking dish.
  4. Make the Sauce: In a separate bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, and Worcestershire sauce until smooth. Pour this sauce evenly over the hamburger steaks in the baking dish. Scatter the thinly sliced onions and optional mushrooms on top.
  5. Bake: Cover the baking dish with foil to retain moisture and bake for 30-35 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for another 10 minutes until the sauce is bubbly and the patties are fully cooked.
  6. Serve: Garnish with freshly chopped parsley if desired. Serve the casserole warm alongside mashed potatoes or egg noodles for a complete meal.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can use ground chuck or a combination of beef and pork.
  • Adjust the salt and pepper according to your taste preference.
  • Including mushrooms is optional but adds great texture and flavor.
  • Make sure not to overmix the meat mixture to keep patties tender.
  • Leftovers store well in the refrigerator for 3-4 days and can be reheated in the oven or microwave.
