Description

Experience the soft, fluffy, and irresistibly buttery Garlic Naan that rivals your favorite restaurant. This classic Indian flatbread is made with a simple dough enriched with yogurt and milk, infused with fresh garlic and coriander, and finished with a generous brushing of butter for an authentic, aromatic treat perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup thick yogurt
  • ½ cup lukewarm milk
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tbsp oil

Topping Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp chopped garlic
  • 2 tbsp chopped coriander
  • Butter for brushing

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Mix well to evenly distribute the dry ingredients.
  2. Add wet ingredients: Add the thick yogurt, lukewarm milk, and oil to the dry mixture. Mix until a soft and slightly sticky dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Rest the dough: Place the dough back into the bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rest for 1 to 1.5 hours at room temperature to allow it to rise and become fluffy.
  4. Divide and shape: After the dough has rested, punch it down gently and divide it into 6 equal portions. Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten into an oval or tear-drop shape about ¼ inch thick.
  5. Add garlic and coriander: Sprinkle chopped garlic and coriander evenly over one side of each flattened dough piece. Press gently to adhere the garlic and coriander to the dough surface.
  6. Cook the naan: Heat a skillet or pan over medium-high heat until hot. Place one naan, garlic side up, on the skillet. When bubbles start to form, flip the naan and cook on the other side until golden brown and cooked through, about 1-2 minutes per side. Optionally, press gently with a spatula to aid even cooking.
  7. Butter the naan: Remove the cooked naan from the skillet and immediately brush generously with butter while still hot. Repeat the process for all remaining naans.
  8. Serve warm: Serve the buttery garlic naan warm alongside your favorite curries, kebabs, or enjoy it on its own as a flavorful snack.

Notes

  • For extra softness, cover the cooked naan with a clean kitchen towel until ready to serve.
  • You can substitute plain yogurt if thick yogurt is not available, but thick yogurt yields better texture.
  • If you prefer a smokier flavor, cook the naan on an open flame or in a tandoor if possible.
  • Adjust garlic quantity to taste for subtle or strong garlic flavor.
  • This naan recipe can be made Vegan by substituting yogurt and butter with plant-based alternatives.
