Ingredients
Dough and Filling
- 3 tubes (8 ounces each) refrigerated crescent roll sheets
- ½ cup (1 stick / 113 g) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 tablespoon chives, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
- 3 cups (339 g) mild cheddar cheese, shredded, divided
Garlic Butter Topping
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon chives, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven and prepare muffin tin: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly spray a standard 12-cup muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray and set it aside for later.
- Roll out dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll each tube of refrigerated crescent roll dough into a 12x16-inch rectangle. If using perforated crescent roll sheets, pinch seams to seal the dough so it holds together.
- Prepare garlic butter mixture: In a medium bowl, combine the softened butter, finely chopped chives, and minced garlic. Mix thoroughly to create a flavorful garlic butter spread.
- Spread butter on dough: Evenly spread about one-third of the garlic butter mixture over one sheet of rolled-out dough.
- Add cheese layer: Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded mild cheddar cheese evenly over the buttered dough.
- Roll dough into a log: Starting from the long edge, tightly roll the dough sheet into a log shape, encasing the cheese and butter within.
- Cut the dough logs: Cut the rolled log in half to create two shorter logs. Then, cut each of those logs lengthwise in half, resulting in four sections of dough.
- Repeat filling and rolling: Perform the spreading, sprinkling, rolling, and cutting steps with the remaining two sheets of dough and garlic butter mixture. You will end up with 12 sections of dough in total.
- Shape into cruffins: Take one dough section at a time, with the layered side facing out, and roll it tightly into a cinnamon-roll-like shape, tucking the end underneath.
- Arrange in muffin tin: Place each shaped cruffin into the prepared muffin tin cups. Repeat with all 12 sections.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the cruffins turn golden brown and are cooked through.
- Prepare garlic butter topping: While the cruffins bake, whisk together melted butter, minced garlic, chopped chives, and kosher salt in a small bowl.
- Brush butter on warm cruffins: As soon as the cruffins come out of the oven, generously brush them with the prepared garlic butter mixture to add shine and extra flavor.
Notes
- Ensure the dough seams are properly sealed to prevent cheese from leaking during baking.
- Use mild cheddar for a smoother melt; sharp cheddar can also be substituted for bolder flavor.
- Can be served warm as a snack or alongside soups and salads for a savory accompaniment.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, reheat gently before serving.
- Optionally, sprinkle additional fresh chives on top after brushing the garlic butter for garnish.
