Ingredients
Wet Ingredients
- ¾ cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
- 1 cup brown sugar
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg (room temperature)
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Dry Ingredients
- 2½ cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
Add-ins
- 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 cup M&Ms (plus more to top the cookie if desired)
Instructions
- Prepare Baking Sheet: Line a small baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside to use for baking the cookies.
- Cream Butter and Sugars: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the room temperature butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Then beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a separate small bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking soda, and salt to ensure even distribution.
- Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the dry flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing just until combined to avoid overworking the dough.
- Add Chocolate and Candies: Fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips and M&Ms evenly throughout the dough.
- Portion Dough: Using a cookie scoop or tablespoon, scoop out about 2 tablespoons of dough and roll into balls to keep a uniform cookie size.
- Arrange on Sheet: Place the cookie dough balls spaced on the prepared baking sheet; press a few extra M&Ms on top if you like for a colorful finish.
- Freeze Dough: Cover the dough balls with plastic wrap and freeze for at least 1 hour or up to overnight. For overnight frozen dough, allow the dough balls to sit at room temperature for 10 minutes before baking.
- Preheat Oven: Heat your oven to 350°F (175°C) prior to baking to ensure even cooking.
- Bake Cookies: Place the parchment-lined baking sheet with dough balls into the oven and bake for 10 to 12 minutes. The cookies will look slightly underbaked when done.
- Cool Cookies: Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for several minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Store: Once cooled, store the cookies in an airtight container for up to one week to maintain freshness.
Notes
- Freezing the dough allows you to bake fresh cookies anytime, just bake from frozen after a short rest.
- Do not overmix the dough once the flour is added to ensure tender cookies.
- You can substitute M&Ms with any other candy or nuts if preferred.
- Use room temperature butter and egg for better mixing and texture.
- Pressing extra candies on top before baking adds a colorful and decorative touch.
