Description

Classic chocolate chip cookies loaded with semi-sweet chocolate chips and colorful M&Ms. These soft, buttery cookies are perfect for any occasion and can be prepped ahead by freezing the dough for fresh-baked goodness whenever you want.

Ingredients

Wet Ingredients

  • ¾ cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg (room temperature)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Dry Ingredients

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Add-ins

  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup M&Ms (plus more to top the cookie if desired)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Baking Sheet: Line a small baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside to use for baking the cookies.
  2. Cream Butter and Sugars: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the room temperature butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Then beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a separate small bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking soda, and salt to ensure even distribution.
  4. Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the dry flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing just until combined to avoid overworking the dough.
  5. Add Chocolate and Candies: Fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips and M&Ms evenly throughout the dough.
  6. Portion Dough: Using a cookie scoop or tablespoon, scoop out about 2 tablespoons of dough and roll into balls to keep a uniform cookie size.
  7. Arrange on Sheet: Place the cookie dough balls spaced on the prepared baking sheet; press a few extra M&Ms on top if you like for a colorful finish.
  8. Freeze Dough: Cover the dough balls with plastic wrap and freeze for at least 1 hour or up to overnight. For overnight frozen dough, allow the dough balls to sit at room temperature for 10 minutes before baking.
  9. Preheat Oven: Heat your oven to 350°F (175°C) prior to baking to ensure even cooking.
  10. Bake Cookies: Place the parchment-lined baking sheet with dough balls into the oven and bake for 10 to 12 minutes. The cookies will look slightly underbaked when done.
  11. Cool Cookies: Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for several minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  12. Store: Once cooled, store the cookies in an airtight container for up to one week to maintain freshness.

Notes

  • Freezing the dough allows you to bake fresh cookies anytime, just bake from frozen after a short rest.
  • Do not overmix the dough once the flour is added to ensure tender cookies.
  • You can substitute M&Ms with any other candy or nuts if preferred.
  • Use room temperature butter and egg for better mixing and texture.
  • Pressing extra candies on top before baking adds a colorful and decorative touch.
