Description

Delightful and easy-to-make Chocolate Hand Pies featuring flaky puff pastry filled with rich dark chocolate, baked to golden perfection. Perfect as a portable treat or dessert that combines buttery crunch with gooey chocolate centers.

Ingredients

Puff Pastry

  • 1 package puff pastry sheets (about 17.3 oz)

Filling

  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips (6 oz)

Topping

  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 egg + 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
  2. Prepare Puff Pastry: Roll out the puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface to avoid sticking and maintain the dough’s texture. Use a cookie cutter or glass to cut out circles from the dough, roughly 3 to 4 inches in diameter.
  3. Add Chocolate Filling: Place about 1 tablespoon of dark chocolate chips in the center of each pastry circle. This will provide a rich, melty center once baked.
  4. Seal Pies: Fold each circle in half to create a semicircle and press the edges firmly with a fork to seal in the filling and prevent leakage during baking.
  5. Apply Egg Wash and Sugar: Mix 1 egg with 1 tablespoon of water to make an egg wash. Brush the tops of the hand pies thoroughly to give them a beautiful golden color when baked. Sprinkle granulated sugar evenly over the egg wash for a sweet, slightly crunchy topping.
  6. Bake: Place the prepared hand pies on the lined baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until they turn golden brown and puff up beautifully.
  7. Cool and Serve: Allow the hand pies to cool slightly on a wire rack to set the filling and prevent burns. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Ensure the puff pastry is kept cold before rolling out to maintain flakiness.
  • You can substitute dark chocolate chips with semi-sweet or milk chocolate based on preference.
  • For an extra touch, add a pinch of cinnamon or a few chopped nuts to the filling.
  • Store leftover pies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or freeze for longer storage.
  • Reheat in the oven briefly before serving to regain crispness.
