Description

This Cinnamon Roll King Cake recipe combines the softness of jumbo cinnamon rolls with vibrant colored frosting to create a festive dessert perfect for celebrations. The cake is baked until golden brown, then decorated with colorful icing, making it a fun and visually appealing treat that serves 8 to 10 people.

Ingredients

Base

  • 2 tubes (17.5 oz each) jumbo cinnamon rolls

Frosting

  • 1 tub (16 oz) white frosting
  • Green color gel (Wilton Leaf Green)
  • Yellow color gel (Golden Yellow)
  • Violet color gel (Wilton Violet)

Decoration

  • Baby doll figurine (optional, for traditional king cake)

Instructions

  1. Prepare and shape dough: Press the cinnamon rolls into a baking pan. The rolls tend to pop up, so you need to squeeze them together, flattening with your palms to create an even, level surface.
  2. Add the figurine: Place a baby doll figurine inside the cake at this point if desired. This traditional addition is usually hidden in the cake for a celebratory surprise.
  3. Bake the cake: Bake in a preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until the cake is golden brown. Allow to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before carefully inverting it onto a flat surface. Let it cool completely before frosting.
  4. Prepare the frosting: Divide the white frosting evenly into three separate bowls. Color each bowl with a different color gel (green, yellow, and violet). Transfer the colored frosting into resealable plastic bags, leaving them unsealed initially.
  5. Warm and pipe icing: Microwave the bags with frosting for 15 seconds to warm and soften. Seal the bags and knead the frosting to mix well. Snip the tip off each bag for piping.
  6. Decorate the cake: Drizzle the colored frosting gracefully over the cooled cake in the traditional Mardi Gras colors. Reheat the frosting bags as needed if the icing thickens while decorating.
  7. Set and serve: Allow the frosting to set and thicken on the cake before slicing and serving. Enjoy your colorful Cinnamon Roll King Cake!

Notes

  • Use the baby doll figurine carefully; ensure it is clean and safe for food contact before inserting it into the cake.
  • The warming step for frosting helps achieve smooth, even drizzling.
  • This cake serves 8-10 people, making it great for parties and festive occasions.
  • Color gels create vivid colors without affecting frosting consistency.
