Description

This Easy French Toast Casserole is a comforting, make-ahead breakfast dish that's perfect for feeding a crowd. Featuring custard-soaked French bread baked to golden perfection, it's versatile, customizable, and ideal for holiday mornings or cozy weekend brunches.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf of French bread (about 10 to 12 ounces), cut into cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups of whole milk
  • ½ cup of heavy cream
  • ¼ cup of granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup of brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon of salt
  • Optional toppings: powdered sugar, maple syrup, fresh berries, or whipped cream

Instructions

  1. Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish and spread the cubed French bread evenly inside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, both sugars, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  3. Pour the custard mixture over the bread cubes, pressing down gently to ensure all pieces are coated.
  4. Cover the dish with foil and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the casserole covered for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for another 25-30 minutes until golden brown and set.
  6. Let stand for a few minutes before serving. Top with powdered sugar, maple syrup, fresh berries, or whipped cream as desired.

Notes

  • Prepare the night before for a hassle-free morning.
  • Use brioche or challah for a richer texture.
  • Customize with chocolate chips, nuts, or dried fruits.
  • Make a savory version by omitting sugar and adding meats and vegetables.
