Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 200 g (7 oz) smoked beef sausage, sliced into rounds
- 1 (400 g) medium cabbage, thinly sliced
- 1 (150 g) medium onion, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp olive oil or avocado oil
Optional Vegetables
- 1 (150 g) medium bell pepper, sliced
- 1 (100 g) medium carrot, julienned
Sauce and Seasoning
- 2 tbsp soy sauce or tamari for gluten-free option
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp honey or low-carb sweetener (optional)
- Pinch of chili flakes (optional for spice)
Instructions
- Preparation: Gather all ingredients and prepare them for cooking by slicing the sausage into bite-sized rounds or strips and thinly slicing the cabbage, onion, and any optional vegetables.
- Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, mix together soy sauce, sesame oil, and honey or sweetener along with chili flakes if using. This will be used to coat the stir fry later.
- Brown the sausage: Heat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat and add the olive or avocado oil. Add the sliced sausage and cook until golden brown and slightly crispy, approximately 3-5 minutes. Remove the sausage from the pan and set aside.
- Cook the aromatics: Using the same pan, add the minced garlic and sliced onion. Sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant and slightly softened.
- Add the cabbage and vegetables: Toss in the thinly sliced cabbage, bell pepper, and carrot if using. Cook for 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage softens but still retains a slight crunch.
- Combine everything: Return the browned sausage to the skillet. Pour the prepared sauce over the ingredients and stir well to evenly coat. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
- Serve: Remove the skillet from heat and serve the stir fry hot. Optionally garnish with sesame seeds or fresh herbs for an extra flair and texture.
Notes
- For a gluten-free version, use tamari sauce instead of soy sauce.
- You can substitute smoked beef sausage with chicken or turkey sausage for a leaner option.
- Adjust the amount of chili flakes according to your spice tolerance.
- This dish can be served with steamed rice or noodles to make a more filling meal.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated on the stovetop.
