Description

A fun, handheld twist on classic French toast, these roll ups feature soft bread filled with sweet spreads, dipped in egg, sautéed to golden perfection, and coated in cinnamon sugar.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices soft white sandwich bread
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar (plus extra for coating)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (plus extra for coating)
  • 23 tablespoons unsalted butter, for cooking
  • Your choice of fillings: Nutella, cream cheese & strawberries, peanut butter, jam, lemon curd, etc.
  • Maple syrup, for serving

Instructions

  1. Trim crusts from bread slices and roll each flat with a rolling pin.
  2. Lay a teaspoon or so of your desired filling near one edge and roll up tightly.
  3. In a shallow bowl, whisk eggs and milk. In another bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon for coating.
  4. Heat butter in a sauté pan or griddle over medium heat.
  5. Dip each roll in egg mix, coat all sides, then place seam-side down in pan.
  6. Cook ~1–2 minutes per side until golden and crispy, adding more butter if needed.
  7. Remove rolls, roll in cinnamon-sugar mixture, and serve warm with maple syrup.

Notes

  • You can prepare the rolls ahead and refrigerate uncooked for up to 6 hours.
  • For a crunchy texture, press rolls into crushed cornflakes after egg dip before cooking.
  • To freeze, cool rolls completely, wrap individually, and freeze for up to 2 months.
  • Bake alternative: brush with melted butter and bake at 350°F for 15–20 minutes, flipping halfway.
