  • Method: Stovetop
  • Cuisine: Mexican

Description

This homemade taco seasoning blend is a flavorful and easy-to-make mix of classic spices that enhances any taco meat or Mexican-inspired dish. Perfectly balanced with chili powder, garlic, cumin, and a hint of cayenne for heat, it allows you to control the salt and additives compared to store-bought mixes.

Ingredients

Spices

  • 2 tbsp chili powder
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ¼ tsp ground cumin
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. Mix the spices: In a small bowl, combine chili powder, garlic powder, dried oregano, paprika, salt, black pepper, ground cumin, and cayenne pepper. Stir well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  2. Store the seasoning: Transfer the mixed taco seasoning into a jar or an airtight bag for storage. Keep it in a cool, dry place to maintain freshness.
  3. Use the seasoning: When ready to cook, add approximately 2 tablespoons of the seasoning per pound (450 grams) of cooked ground beef, chicken, or turkey for optimal flavor.
  4. Simmer with liquid: Add ⅓ cup of water to the seasoned cooked meat and simmer for 5 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld and the seasoning to fully infuse the meat.

Notes

  • You can adjust the cayenne pepper quantity to control the spiciness to your preference.
  • For a lower-sodium option, reduce or omit the salt.
  • This seasoning blend can also be used for vegetables or beans to create vegetarian tacos.
  • Store the seasoning in an airtight container to keep it fresh for up to 6 months.
