Description

Amish Poor Man's Steak is a comforting and budget-friendly dinner recipe made from ground beef, cracker crumbs, and a creamy mushroom gravy. This old-fashioned Amish-style dish is baked to perfection and ideal for cozy family dinners. Serve with mashed potatoes or noodles for the ultimate comfort food experience.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup cracker crumbs (or breadcrumbs/oats as variation)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • All-purpose flour (for dredging)
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup water or beef broth

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, milk, cracker crumbs, salt, pepper, and chopped onion.
  2. Form into a loaf shape, cover, and refrigerate overnight.
  3. Slice chilled meatloaf into thick patties.
  4. Lightly dredge each patty in flour.
  5. Pan-fry patties in a skillet over medium heat until browned on both sides.
  6. Place patties in a baking dish.
  7. In a separate bowl, mix cream of mushroom soup with water or broth until smooth.
  8. Pour gravy mixture over patties.
  9. Bake at 350°F for about 1 hour until bubbly and cooked through.

Notes

  • Chilling overnight helps the patties hold their shape better.
  • Swap in cream of celery or cream of chicken soup for a different flavor.
  • Worcestershire sauce or garlic powder can be added to the meat for extra depth.
  • Leftovers store well in the fridge for 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Reheat gently in the microwave or oven until hot throughout.
