Description

This Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Porridge is a warm, comforting breakfast featuring creamy rolled oats cooked in almond milk and sweetened condensed milk, infused with maple syrup, vanilla, and apple pie spices. Topped with sautéed apples caramelized in butter and brown sugar, plus toasted nuts, crumble topping, and granola for added texture and flavor, this porridge is perfect for a cozy morning treat.

Ingredients

Oatmeal

  • 1 cup thick-cut Rolled oats, organic
  • 3 cups Almond milk (or whole milk, plant-based milk, or water)
  • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 2-3 tablespoons pure maple syrup (or organic cane sugar or brown sugar)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1-2 teaspoons apple pie spice (see notes for homemade blend)
  • Pinch of sea salt

Sautéed Apple Topping

  • 1 organic apple, sliced (choose your favorite variety such as Honeycrisp or Fuji)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (or salted butter, omit salt in recipe)
  • 1/4 cup organic brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon apple pie spice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt

Garnishes

  • Toasted walnuts or pecans
  • Sprinkle of apple pie spice
  • Crumble topping (optional, see blog post for recipe)
  • Granola (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the oatmeal: In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, combine the rolled oats and almond milk. Stir well to mix and bring the mixture to a boil.
  2. Simmer the oats: Once boiling, reduce heat to low and let the oats simmer for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. At the halfway point, stir in the sweetened condensed milk. Continue simmering until the oats swell, thicken, and become creamy, with just over half the liquid remaining.
  3. Flavor the oatmeal: Stir in the pure maple syrup, vanilla extract, and apple pie spice blend. Let it simmer gently for an additional 1-2 minutes to meld the flavors, then remove from heat.
  4. Prepare the sautéed apple topping: Heat a 10-inch skillet over medium-high heat and melt the butter. Add the brown sugar, apple pie spice, vanilla extract, and a pinch of sea salt. Stir until combined and bubbling, about 1-2 minutes.
  5. Cook the apples: Add the sliced apples to the skillet, tossing to coat them thoroughly in the butter and sugar mixture. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the apples are tender and the sauce has thickened. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
  6. Assemble and serve: Spoon the warm oatmeal into serving bowls. Top with the sautéed apple mixture, then sprinkle with toasted walnuts or pecans. Add a light dusting of apple pie spice, and if desired, crumble topping and/or granola for extra texture.
  7. Enjoy your cozy breakfast: Serve immediately for a delicious, comforting start to your day. Bon Appétit!

Notes

  • Apple pie spice can be homemade by blending ground cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves.
  • To make the oatmeal thicker, reduce the almond milk slightly or cook longer; for thinner oatmeal, add a splash more milk or water.
  • Use firm apples like Honeycrisp or Fuji for the best sautéed texture.
  • Crumble topping adds delightful crunch; refer to the blog post for homemade recipes.
  • Substitutions: Maple syrup can be replaced with organic cane sugar or brown sugar; almond milk can be swapped with other plant-based or dairy milks or water.
