Description

Pull Apart Bread is a cheesy and delicious appetizer perfect for sharing. This recipe features a round sourdough loaf stuffed with Monterey Jack cheese, butter, and poppy seeds, baked to melty, flavorful perfection and garnished with fresh green onions.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 lb round sourdough loaf, unsliced
  • 1 lb Monterey Jack cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 2-3 tsp poppy seeds
  • 1/2 cup green onions, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the bread.
  2. Slice the Bread: Using a bread knife, cut 1-inch wide slices width-wise into the sourdough loaf, ensuring you do not cut all the way through the bottom. Leave about 1 inch uncut at the bottom. Repeat the slicing in the perpendicular direction to create a crosshatch pattern without slicing through the base.
  3. Stuff with Cheese: Shred the Monterey Jack cheese and carefully stuff the cheese into each cut and nook throughout the bread so it is evenly distributed and will melt inside.
  4. Prepare Butter Mixture: Mix the melted butter with the poppy seeds, then drizzle this mixture evenly over the stuffed bread to add flavor and help with browning.
  5. Bake Covered: Tent a piece of foil over the bread to prevent excessive browning and place the loaf on a baking sheet. Bake in the oven at 350°F for 15 minutes to allow the cheese to start melting.
  6. Bake Uncovered: Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes to let the cheese fully melt and the top become golden and crispy.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Remove from oven and sprinkle the chopped green onions over the top before serving. Enjoy warm as a shareable appetizer.

Notes

  • Be careful not to slice all the way through the bread to keep it intact for stuffing and easy pulling apart.
  • Monterey Jack cheese melts smoothly but you can substitute with mozzarella or a blend of cheeses if desired.
  • For extra flavor, consider adding garlic powder or herbs to the melted butter before drizzling.
  • Use fresh green onions for a bright, fresh garnish that complements the richness of the cheese.
  • This appetizer pairs wonderfully with soups, salads, or as a crowd-pleasing party snack.
