Description

This Creamy Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal is a naturally sweetened, comforting breakfast dish that combines soft cooked apples with warming cinnamon and creamy oats. Perfect for a quick, wholesome start to your day, it uses simple ingredients and gentle stovetop cooking to create a delicious, nourishing meal.

Ingredients

Oatmeal

  • 1 cup (240 ml) milk or plant-based milk
  • 1 cup (240 ml) water
  • 1 cup (90 g) quick oats
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine salt

Apple Cinnamon Topping

  • 1 apple (170 g), peeled or unpeeled, diced
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup (or substitute with honey or sugar)
  • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons water (to cook apples)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples: Dice the apple into small pieces; finer slices will soften faster. Peeling the apple is optional according to preference.
  2. Cook the Apples: In a small saucepan, combine the diced apples with just enough water to cover the bottom of the pan (about 2 tablespoons). Cook over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples become soft and most of the water evaporates, leaving about 1-2 tablespoons of liquid.
  3. Add Sweetener and Cinnamon to Apples: Stir in 1 tablespoon maple syrup and 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon into the softened apples. Mix well to coat evenly. This mixture can be kept for topping or added to the oatmeal.
  4. Cook the Oatmeal: In a separate saucepan, combine oats, water, milk, 1 tablespoon maple syrup (optional), and salt. Bring the mixture to a low boil over medium heat, then reduce to a low simmer. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring often, until the oatmeal is creamy and thickened. Adjust consistency by adding a splash of milk or water, or cooking longer.
  5. Combine and Serve: Stir about two-thirds of the cinnamon apples into the cooked oatmeal. Transfer the oatmeal into two bowls and top with the remaining cinnamon apples. Add additional sweetener if desired. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For a dairy-free version, use any plant-based milk such as almond, oat, or soy milk.
  • Adjust sweetness by adding more or less maple syrup, or substitute with honey or sugar to taste.
  • The apple can be peeled or left unpeeled depending on texture preference.
  • Cooking apples finely and thoroughly softening them enhances the creamy texture and natural sweetness.
  • This recipe is easily doubled to serve more people.
