Ingredients
Cabbage
- 1 medium head green cabbage (about 2 lbs, cored and cut into 5-6 wedges)
Sauce and Seasoning
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 small yellow onion (finely chopped)
- 4 cloves garlic (minced)
- ½ cup heavy cream
- ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (plus more for garnish)
Instructions
- Sear the cabbage: Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the cabbage wedges, flat side down, and sear without moving for 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden brown using tongs to flip. Remove the cabbage and set aside on a plate.
- Sauté onions: Reduce heat to medium and add the finely chopped onion to the same skillet. Cook until softened and golden, about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
- Add garlic and seasoning: Stir in the minced garlic and Cajun seasoning, cooking for 1 minute until aromatic and fragrant.
- Create the creamy sauce: Pour in the heavy cream, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Let it simmer for 2 to 3 minutes to slightly thicken.
- Incorporate Parmesan and parsley: Stir in the freshly grated Parmesan cheese and chopped parsley, allowing the sauce to simmer another minute until smooth and creamy.
- Combine cabbage and sauce: Return the seared cabbage wedges to the skillet, spooning the sauce over the top. Partially cover the skillet and cook for an additional 5 minutes, until the cabbage is fork-tender and infused with the sauce.
- Garnish and serve: Sprinkle with extra chopped fresh parsley for garnish and serve warm. Enjoy this flavorful, creamy side dish!
Notes
- Use a sharp knife to core and cut the cabbage into even wedges for even cooking.
- For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of red pepper flakes along with the Cajun seasoning.
- If you prefer a lighter sauce, substitute half-and-half for the heavy cream, but the sauce will be less rich.
- To make this dish vegetarian, use vegetarian-friendly Parmesan or a similar vegan cheese.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop.
