Description

This Easy Apple Crisp is a delightful fall dessert featuring juicy Granny Smith apples coated in a cinnamon-spiced butter sauce, topped with a crisp, buttery oat crumble. It bakes to golden perfection, offering a warm and comforting treat perfect for family gatherings or cozy nights at home.

Ingredients

Topping

  • 1/2 cup (70g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup (110g) packed light-brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/3 cup (76g) unsalted butter, cold, diced into small cubes

Apple Filling

  • 2 lbs Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and sliced thin (about 1/8-inch, at room temperature)
  • 3 Tbsp (42g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 3 Tbsp water
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup (55g) light-brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and position the oven rack one level below the center. Butter an 8x8 inch baking dish or a similar-sized casserole dish, then set it aside.
  2. Make the Topping: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, oats, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt for about 30 seconds. Add the diced cold butter. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the dry mixture until small crumble-like pieces form. Transfer the topping to the refrigerator to chill while preparing the apple filling.
  3. Prepare the Filling: In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter and flour until smooth. Stir in the water, lemon juice, and vanilla extract until well blended. Then add the brown sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt, mixing to combine.
  4. Toss the Apples: Place the thinly sliced apples in a large bowl. Pour the butter mixture over the apples and toss thoroughly to coat each slice evenly. Transfer the coated apples to the prepared baking dish and spread them out into an even layer.
  5. Add the Topping: Remove the chilled topping from the refrigerator and evenly sprinkle the crumble over the apple layer in the baking dish.
  6. Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender when pierced with a toothpick, approximately 35 minutes.
  7. Rest and Serve: Remove the apple crisp from the oven and allow it to rest for about 10 minutes before serving. For an extra indulgence, serve warm with vanilla ice cream and salted caramel sauce.

Notes

  • Slice apples thinly (about 1/8-inch) to ensure they become fully tender during baking; thick slices may remain crunchy.
  • If using salted butter, reduce salt in the topping to 1/8 tsp and omit salt from the filling to balance flavors.
