Description
A rich and fudgy chocolate cake topped with warm, silky hot chocolate frosting that soaks into the layers, making every bite decadently moist and gooey.
Ingredients
- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk (or buttermilk)
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot water or brewed hot coffee
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
- 2 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
- 1/4 cup heavy cream or milk (for frosting)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 8-inch round cake pans or one 9-inch pan.
- Sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
- In a separate bowl, whisk sugar, eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla until smooth.
- Add the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, then stir in the hot water or coffee until the batter is smooth and thin.
- Divide the batter evenly between pans and bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out with moist crumbs.
- Allow cakes to cool in the pans briefly, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- To make the frosting, melt butter over low heat, then whisk in cocoa powder until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and cream, stirring constantly. Stir in vanilla and keep warm.
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate and pour half the hot frosting over it. Top with the second layer and drizzle remaining frosting over the top and sides.
Notes
- Use hot brewed coffee instead of water for a deeper chocolate flavor.
- The cake can be made a day in advance; wait to frost until just before serving.
- To freeze, wrap unfrosted layers tightly and store up to 3 months.
- Microwave slices for 10–15 seconds to revive the gooey texture.
