Description

This Easy Custard Pie Recipe features a creamy, smooth custard filling nestled in a flaky unbaked pie crust, lightly flavored with vanilla and nutmeg. Baked to perfection, this classic dessert is simple to prepare and perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Pie Crust

  • 1 unbaked pie crust

Custard Filling

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 6 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (plus 1/8 teaspoon for garnish)
  • 3 cups whole milk, room temperature

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it's ready for baking the custard pie.
  2. Prepare Pie Pan: Lightly spray a 9½-inch pie pan with nonstick spray to prevent sticking and make removal easier.
  3. Place Pie Crust: Place the unbaked pie crust in the pie pan and press the dough firmly against the sides to evenly line the pan.
  4. Mix Custard Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg, and vanilla extract for about 2 minutes until fully combined.
  5. Add Milk: Gradually whisk in the whole milk and continue whisking for another 3 minutes until the mixture is smooth and well blended.
  6. Fill Pie Shell: Pour the custard mixture into the prepared pie crust, filling it evenly but leaving a slight margin from the top.
  7. Sprinkle Nutmeg Garnish: Lightly sprinkle the remaining 1/8 teaspoon of ground nutmeg on the surface of the custard for added aroma and flavor.
  8. Bake: Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until the custard is set and a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
  9. Cool and Serve: Allow the pie to cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm or chilled as desired.

Notes

  • Use room temperature eggs and milk for a smoother custard consistency.
  • Check the pie toward the end of the baking time to avoid overcooking, which can cause cracking.
  • You can sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon along with nutmeg for extra flavor if desired.
  • Let the pie cool completely if preferred to serve chilled custard pie.
  • Use a deep-dish pie pan if you want a thicker custard layer.
