Ingredients
Fruit Mixture
- 4 cups pears (peeled and thinly sliced from 5-6 pears)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Topping
- 1 cup rolled oats (gluten free, if needed)
- 1/3 cup all purpose flour (gluten free, if needed)
- 1/2 cup brown sugar (packed)
- 1/2 cup pecans or walnuts (optional, chopped)
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare baking dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 2-quart baking dish thoroughly with butter or non-stick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Mix pear filling: In a large bowl, combine the peeled and sliced pears with granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg. Toss everything until the pears are fully coated. Transfer this mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
- Prepare the topping: Using the same bowl, mix together the rolled oats, all-purpose flour, and brown sugar. If using nuts, fold in the chopped pecans or walnuts now for added texture and flavor.
- Incorporate butter: Cut the cold unsalted butter into the dry ingredients using a fork, pastry cutter, or your fingers until the mixture forms coarse crumbs resembling a crumble topping.
- Assemble the crisp: Evenly sprinkle the crumble topping over the pear mixture in the baking dish, covering the fruit completely.
- Bake the crisp: Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 45 minutes. Bake until the topping is golden brown and the pears are bubbling hot around the edges, signaling the crisp is done.
- Cool and serve: Remove from the oven and let the pear crisp cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm, at room temperature, or chilled according to your preference.
Notes
- For a gluten-free version, substitute the rolled oats and all-purpose flour with certified gluten-free products.
- Adding nuts is optional but adds a nice crunch and flavor.
- Best served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days and reheated before serving.
- Make sure pears are ripe but firm so they hold up well during baking.
