Description

This Gnocchi Shepherd’s Pie is a comforting and hearty twist on the classic shepherd’s pie, swapping traditional mashed potatoes with tender potato gnocchi. Saucy ground beef, carrots, peas, and flavorful seasonings come together quickly in a skillet, making this an easy and satisfying meal that’s perfect for weeknights.

Ingredients

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 3 medium carrots, peeled and diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas

Gnocchi

  • 16 ounce package potato gnocchi

Sauce and Seasonings

  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup water or beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Cook the gnocchi: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the gnocchi and cook according to package directions. Once they float to the surface and are tender, drain them well and set aside.
  2. Cook the beef and vegetables: While the gnocchi are cooking, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef, chopped onion, and diced carrots. Cook for 8–10 minutes, breaking up the beef into crumbles, until the beef is fully browned and the vegetables have softened. Drain any excess grease from the skillet.
  3. Add sauce ingredients and peas: To the skillet, add frozen peas, ketchup, water or beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to combine. Reduce heat to medium and cook for 3–5 minutes, stirring occasionally until the peas are heated through and the mixture is well coated in sauce.
  4. Combine gnocchi and beef mixture: Add the drained gnocchi to the skillet and gently stir until the gnocchi are evenly coated with the beef and vegetable mixture.
  5. Final heat through and serve: Cook for another 1–2 minutes, stirring gently, until everything is hot and well combined. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use beef broth instead of water when mixing the sauce.
  • If you prefer, fresh peas can be used instead of frozen, adding a slight crunch.
  • Vegetarian variation: Substitute ground beef with plant-based ground meat or sautéed mushrooms.
  • Add a sprinkle of shredded cheese on top before serving for extra decadence.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated on the stovetop or microwave.
