Description

Graveyard Brownies are a fun and festive Halloween treat featuring moist chocolate brownies topped with Milano cookie "headstones" decorated with RIP messages, green buttercream frosting resembling grass, and candy pumpkins for a spooky graveyard effect.

Ingredients

For the Brownies:

  • Prepared brownie batter for an 8'' pan
  • 12 Milano cookies
  • Black decorating gel
  • 12 candy pumpkins

For the Green Buttercream Frosting:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter (salted or unsalted), softened
  • 2 teaspoons milk
  • Green food coloring, a few drops

Instructions

  1. Prepare Pan and Bake Brownies: Line an 8” baking pan with parchment paper, leaving overhang on the sides to easily lift brownies out later. Pour the prepared brownie batter into the pan and spread it evenly. Bake according to your brownie recipe's instructions, usually about 30 minutes.
  2. Cool and Cut Brownies: Let the brownies cool completely. Use the parchment paper overhang to lift brownies onto a flat surface. Cut into 12 rectangular pieces (4 x 3 pattern).
  3. Make Green Buttercream Frosting: In a bowl, combine powdered sugar, softened butter, and milk. Mix for 2 minutes until light and fluffy. Adjust consistency by adding more powdered sugar to thicken or milk to thin. Add green food coloring and mix until desired color is achieved. Set aside.
  4. Decorate Milano Cookies: Use black edible decorating gel to write "R-I-P" on each Milano cookie. Optionally, trim a small slice off the bottom edge of cookies to shorten the "headstones."
  5. Assemble Graveyard Brownies: Press a decorated Milano cookie into the top of each brownie piece to resemble a grave headstone. Spoon a small amount of green frosting near each cookie to resemble grass. Place a candy pumpkin on top of the frosting beside the cookie.

Notes

  • For brownies, you can use a homemade chocolate brownie recipe halved to fit an 8×8” pan or a boxed mix (Ghirardelli recommended).
  • If using a 9×13” pan, double the cookies, candy pumpkins, and frosting amounts.
  • Black decorating gel is commonly available in the baking section of grocery stores or Walmart near birthday cake supplies.
