Description

This Healthy Black Forest Overnight Oats recipe combines fresh cherries, rich cocoa, and wholesome ingredients for a delicious and nutritious make-ahead breakfast. The oats soak overnight with chia seeds, Greek yogurt, and milk to create a creamy, chocolatey base, complemented by bursts of fresh cherry flavor and a hint of cinnamon and vanilla. Perfect for a quick, satisfying morning meal that feels indulgent yet is packed with fiber, protein, and antioxidants.

Ingredients

Cherry Mixture

  • 4 cups Fresh Cherries (pitted and halved)
  • ½ cup Agave Nectar
  • 1 tsp Sea Salt
  • 2 tsps Lemon Zest

Overnight Oats Base

  • 2 cups Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats (Large flake)
  • 4 tbsp Chia Seeds
  • 2 cups Plain Non-fat Greek Yogurt
  • 1 ½ cups Milk (1% fat)
  • ½ cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 2 tsps Vanilla Extract
  • 1 tsp Almond Extract
  • 2 tsps Cinnamon

Garnish (optional)

  • Light whipped cream (spray can)
  • Dark chocolate shavings
  • Whole cherries with stems

Instructions

  1. Mash Cherry Base: In the bottom of each jar, mash half the cherries (½ cup per jar, totaling 2 cups divided among 4 jars) along with agave nectar, sea salt, and lemon zest (dividing agave, salt, and lemon zest evenly between jars) until very juicy to create a flavorful cherry base.
  2. Mix Chocolate Yogurt Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk the unsweetened cocoa powder into the milk and plain non-fat Greek yogurt until the mixture is smooth and resembles a chocolate sauce without lumps.
  3. Add Dry Ingredients to Jar: Add rolled oats, chia seeds, vanilla extract, almond extract, and cinnamon into each jar over the cherry base portion.
  4. Combine Mixtures: Pour the chocolate yogurt and milk mixture into each jar, dividing it equally. Stir vigorously inside the jar until everything is combined evenly into a uniform dark chocolate color.
  5. Fold in Remaining Cherries: Gently fold in the remaining 2 cups of cherry halves (½ cup per jar) without crushing them, adding bursts of fresh cherry texture throughout.
  6. Set Overnight: Cover each jar and refrigerate overnight for at least 8 hours to allow the oats and chia seeds to absorb the liquid and flavors to meld.
  7. Garnish Before Serving: Just before serving the next morning, top each jar with a dollop of light whipped cream, a few dark chocolate shavings, and a whole cherry with the stem for an elegant finish.

Notes

  • For best results, use fresh, ripe cherries that are well-pitted to avoid bitterness.
  • You can prepare these jars up to 24 hours in advance; the oats will continue to soften but remain delicious.
  • Use 1% milk as recommended for balanced creaminess; substitute with any milk of choice including plant-based for a different diet option.
  • The whipped cream garnish is optional and can be omitted for a lower-calorie option.
  • Store leftovers covered in the fridge and consume within 2 days for maximum freshness.
