Description

A comforting and aromatic homemade apple cider recipe perfect for chilly days and festive occasions. This easy-to-make drink combines a mix of sweet and tart apples, oranges, warming spices, and your choice of sweetener, simmered to extract rich flavors. Ideal for sipping hot or chilling for later, with options for customization and versatile serving suggestions.

Ingredients

Fruit

  • 10–12 medium apples (a mix of sweet and tart, e.g., Honeycrisp, Fuji, Granny Smith), quartered
  • 2 oranges, quartered and peeled

Spices

  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves
  • Optional flavor boosters: 1 teaspoon whole allspice, grated fresh nutmeg, and/or 1–2 inches fresh ginger, sliced

Liquids & Sweeteners

  • 14–16 cups water (enough to cover fruit by about an inch)
  • ½ to ¾ cup sweetener (white sugar for clean flavor, brown sugar or maple syrup for warmth and depth)

Other

  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Combine ingredients: Add the quartered apples, peeled and quartered oranges, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and any optional spices like allspice, nutmeg, or ginger into a large stockpot. Pour in enough water to cover the fruit by about 1–2 inches, then add a pinch of salt to enhance flavors.
  2. Simmer gently: Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat, then immediately reduce the heat to maintain a gentle simmer. Cover the pot and cook for about 2 hours, allowing the apples to become very soft and release their natural aromas.
  3. Mash for flavor: Using a potato masher or a sturdy spoon, crush the softened apples and oranges against the sides of the pot. This helps release more juice and the aromatic oils from the fruit and spices. Cover and continue simmering for an additional 30 to 60 minutes to deepen the flavor.
  4. Strain well: Carefully ladle the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into a clean pot or large heatproof bowl. Press firmly on the fruit and spices to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard the pulp and leftover spices afterwards.
  5. Sweeten and balance: While the cider is still warm, stir in your choice of sweetener, starting with ½ cup and adding more if desired up to ¾ cup to match store-bought sweetness levels. Optionally, add a tiny splash of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar to brighten and balance the flavors.
  6. Serve or store: Serve the apple cider hot, garnished with fresh orange slices and cinnamon sticks for a festive touch. Alternatively, let it cool completely and refrigerate for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months for future enjoyment.

Notes

  • The recipe can be adapted for pressure cooker (Instant Pot) or slow cooker (Crock-Pot) methods as per personal preference.
  • Adjust sweetness based on taste; less sweet for a tart cider or more for a dessert-like drink.
  • Optional spices like fresh ginger add warmth, while grated nutmeg provides depth.
  • Storage: Refrigerate up to 5 days or freeze up to 3 months in airtight containers.
  • Serve with festive garnishes such as orange slices and cinnamon sticks for visual appeal and enhanced aroma.
