Description

These Pumpkin Patch Cupcakes are a delightful Halloween-inspired treat featuring rich chocolate cupcakes topped with a creamy chocolate cream cheese frosting, Oreo cookie crumbs resembling dirt, and festive mellowcreme pumpkin candies. Perfect for fall celebrations and gatherings, these cupcakes combine easy cake mix convenience with decorative touches that make them stand out.

Ingredients

Cupcakes

  • 1 15.25oz box Chocolate Fudge Cake Mix (plus ingredients required as per box instructions: oil, eggs, water)

Frosting

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 8 oz. package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 3 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons milk (whole or 2%)

Toppings

  • 36 classic Oreo cookies
  • 24 mellowcreme pumpkin candies
  • Sprinkles (as desired)

Instructions

  1. Prepare cupcake batter: Preheat your oven to the temperature indicated on the cake mix box. Prepare the chocolate fudge cake batter according to the box instructions, using the required oil, eggs, and water.
  2. Bake cupcakes: Pour the batter into cupcake liners and bake in the preheated oven following the cake mix box timing. Once baked, remove the cupcakes from the oven and allow them to cool completely before frosting.
  3. Make the frosting: In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat the softened butter and cream cheese together until smooth and creamy. Add vanilla extract and salt, then beat again to combine. Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, about half a cup at a time to avoid a sugar cloud, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. Beat until the frosting is smooth, creamy, and fluffy. Add milk if necessary to achieve a spreadable consistency.
  4. Prepare Oreo crumbs: Place Oreo cookies in a food processor and pulse until fine crumbs resembling dirt form. Alternatively, place cookies in a ziplock bag and crush with a rolling pin or heavy object.
  5. Pipe frosting onto cupcakes: Fit a piping bag with a large star tip and fill it with the chocolate cream cheese frosting. Pipe a swirl of frosting onto each cooled cupcake.
  6. Add toppings and serve: Sprinkle each frosted cupcake with one to two spoonfuls of Oreo crumbs to simulate dirt. Top with mellowcreme pumpkin candies and decorative sprinkles. Serve immediately and enjoy your festive pumpkin patch cupcakes.

Notes

  • Ensure cupcakes are completely cool before frosting to prevent melting.
  • If you prefer a less sweet frosting, reduce the amount of powdered sugar slightly.
  • You can substitute regular milk with any plant-based milk for a dairy alternative.
  • Store cupcakes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • For a quicker Oreo crumb option, pulse Oreo cookies gently to avoid turning them into powder.
