Ingredients
For the Sliders
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, minced
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 12 sweet rolls
- 10 slices provolone cheese
- 14 ounces sliced deli roast beef
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 1/2 tablespoons dried onion soup mix
For the Au Jus
- 1 packet au jus gravy mix
- 3 cups water
- Fresh chopped parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Caramelize Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 3 tablespoons of butter. Add the thinly sliced onions and coat well. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 12-15 minutes until the onions become soft and golden brown but not burnt.
- Season Onions: Stir in the minced fresh thyme, kosher salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly, then remove the skillet from heat and set the seasoned onions aside.
- Prepare Rolls: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Keep the sweet rolls intact and slice them horizontally to separate the tops from the bottoms. Arrange the bottom halves of the rolls, cut side up, in an 11x7 inch baking dish.
- Assemble Sliders: Layer half of the provolone slices over the roll bottoms. Evenly distribute all the sliced roast beef on top of the cheese. Spread the caramelized onions over the beef, then add the remaining provolone slices. Place the roll tops over the cheese to close the sliders.
- Butter Mixture: In a small bowl, combine the melted 1/2 cup butter with the dried onion soup mix. Brush this mixture evenly over the tops of the rolls. Alternatively, you can pour it over to distribute the flavor.
- Bake: Cover the baking dish loosely with foil, making sure the foil does not touch the rolls. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 5 minutes to brown the top of the rolls.
- Prepare Au Jus: While the sliders bake, prepare the au jus according to the package instructions by mixing the gravy mix with 3 cups of water and heating until combined.
- Serve: Garnish the sliders optionally with fresh chopped parsley. Serve the sliders warm alongside the au jus for dipping.
Notes
- Make sure to cook the onions low and slow to achieve the best caramelization without burning.
- You can substitute provolone cheese with Swiss or mozzarella if preferred.
- For easier dipping, warm the au jus just before serving.
- Sweet rolls provide a nice flavor balance but you can use other soft sandwich rolls if unavailable.
- To enhance flavor, you can add a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce to the au jus.
