Description

These Halloween Poison Apples feature the classic fall favorite with a twist: a shiny, black candy coating that creates a spooky and fun treat perfect for Halloween celebrations. The apples are coated in a homemade black candy glaze made from sugar, corn syrup, and black food coloring, offering a crispy and sweet exterior with the tartness of Granny Smith apples inside.

Ingredients

Candy Coating

  • 3 cups white granulated sugar
  • 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons water
  • ¾ cup corn syrup
  • Black food coloring
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Apples

  • 6 Granny Smith apples
  • 6 6" wooden dowels

Instructions

  1. Prepare baking sheet and thermometer. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. Place the sugar, water, and corn syrup in a saucepan.
  2. Add black food coloring. Stir in the black food coloring to the sugar mixture.
  3. Heat mixture. Heat the mixture over medium-high heat, stirring to combine.
  4. Monitor temperature. Insert a candy thermometer and continue heating until the mixture reaches 290°F (about 8-10 minutes).
  5. Prepare apples. Wash the apples, remove stems, and dry thoroughly. Insert a wooden stick into the center of each apple firmly.
  6. Finish candy coating. When the candy reaches 290°F, remove the pan from heat, add salt and vanilla extract, and stir well.
  7. Dip apples. Dip each apple into the candy coating, swirling to cover with a thick black layer. Lift and let excess drip off.
  8. Set apples. Place each coated apple on the parchment-lined baking sheet and allow to cool completely until the candy hardens.

Notes

  • Work quickly when dipping the apples, as the candy coating hardens rapidly.
  • If the coating starts to harden too soon, return the pan to low heat and stir to soften it before continuing.
  • Use caution when working with hot sugar to avoid burns.
