Description

This delicious and easy crockpot BBQ chicken recipe uses boneless, skinless chicken breasts slow-cooked in a flavorful blend of barbecue sauce, Italian dressing, Worcestershire sauce, and spices. Perfect for pulled chicken sandwiches or as a versatile protein addition to salads, tacos, and more, this dish offers a tender, juicy, and savory meal that requires minimal prep and cooks hands-off all day.

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts, fat trimmed off

Sauce & Seasoning

  • 1 1/4 cup barbecue sauce (such as Sweet Baby Ray’s Honey BBQ)
  • 1/2 cup Italian dressing (fat-free preferred)
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar (optional: reduce to 1/8 cup or omit for less sweetness)
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Crockpot: Liberally spray the inside of a large crockpot or slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray, or use a disposable liner to make cleanup easier.
  2. Season the Chicken: Season the boneless, skinless chicken breasts on all sides with salt, black pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Place the seasoned chicken breasts in the bottom of the crockpot in an even layer.
  3. Make the Sauce: In a medium mixing bowl, combine barbecue sauce, Italian dressing, light brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Whisk until all ingredients are fully blended to create a flavorful sauce.
  4. Cook the Chicken: Pour the sauce evenly over the chicken breasts in the crockpot. Place the lid on the crockpot and cook on high for 2.5 to 3 hours, or on low for 5 to 6 hours until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
  5. Check Doneness: Use a meat thermometer to confirm that the internal temperature of the chicken has reached 165 degrees Fahrenheit for safe consumption.
  6. Shred the Chicken: After cooking, either serve the chicken breasts whole or shred them using two forks directly in the crockpot to allow the chicken to soak up the sauce and marinade.
  7. Serve: Serve the shredded BBQ chicken on sandwich buns for pulled chicken sandwiches, or use it as a topping for pizza, salads, tacos, nachos, over rice, or enjoy it on its own.

Notes

  • Using disposable liners for your crockpot makes cleanup faster and easier.
  • You can adjust the sweetness by reducing or omitting the brown sugar according to taste.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or frozen for longer storage.
  • This recipe is versatile and can be customized with your favorite barbecue sauce or additional spices.
  • Ensure chicken is cooked to a safe internal temperature of 165°F to avoid foodborne illnesses.
