Description

Thai Basil Beef Rolls are a flavorful and fresh appetizer combining savory spiced ground beef with aromatic Thai basil, crisp cucumbers, and crunchy peanuts wrapped in soft tortillas or rice paper. Perfect for a quick and easy meal or party finger food, these rolls deliver a balanced mix of sweet, spicy, and tangy notes with a delicious dipping sauce.

Ingredients

For the Beef Filling

  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground chicken/turkey)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 tsp Chinese 5-spice powder
  • 2 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce or tamari
  • 1 tbsp Thai chili sauce
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame oil

For the Rolls

  • 8 small flour tortillas or rice paper
  • 2 Persian cucumbers, julienned
  • 1 cup fresh cilantro
  • 1 cup Thai basil (or Italian basil)
  • 3 green onions, chopped
  • ½ cup roasted peanuts, chopped

For the Dipping Sauce (Optional)

  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp chili paste
  • 1 tsp lime zest
  • 1 tbsp lime juice
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp tamari
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 1 clove garlic, grated

Instructions

  1. Prepare Sauce Mix: In a small bowl, mix together soy sauce, chili sauce, toasted sesame oil, and Chinese 5-spice powder until well combined. This will be the flavor base for the beef.
  2. Cook the Beef: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add the ground beef. Brown the beef while breaking it apart with a spatula. Once mostly cooked, add minced garlic and grated ginger and cook for an additional 2 minutes to release their aromas.
  3. Glaze the Beef: Pour the prepared sauce mixture over the cooked beef and stir continuously until the beef is well coated, slightly caramelized, and the sauce thickens, glazing the meat beautifully.
  4. Prepare Wrappers: Warm the small flour tortillas in a dry pan or microwave until pliable, or soften rice paper wraps by dipping in warm water to make them easy to roll.
  5. Assemble the Rolls: Lay out each tortilla or rice paper wrapper and add a portion of the glazed beef, then top with fresh herbs like cilantro and basil, julienned cucumber, chopped green onions, and roasted peanuts. Roll tightly to encase the filling.
  6. Make Dipping Sauce: In a separate bowl, whisk together honey, ketchup, chili paste, lime zest, lime juice, rice vinegar, tamari, grated ginger, and garlic to create a balancing sweet-spicy-tangy dipping sauce.
  7. Serve: Arrange the wraps on a plate and serve immediately while warm with the dipping sauce on the side for dipping each roll.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground chicken or turkey for a lighter protein option.
  • Rice paper provides a gluten-free option if tortillas are avoided.
  • Adjust the level of chili sauce and chili paste according to your preferred spice tolerance.
  • For added texture, toast the peanuts lightly before chopping.
  • This recipe is best enjoyed fresh but can be stored separately and assembled before serving for convenience.
  • The dipping sauce is optional but recommended for added flavor complexity.
